1. How did you come to create the mural by the skate ramp at Niseko Hirafu Green Park, and how did the location influence your design?
  • Last year, I had the opportunity to create a larger signboard, which inspired me to participate in this year's painting event as an artist. The event emphasizes a nature-friendly concept, with people gathering in a building constructed from reclaimed wood. This connection to nature influenced my design, so I created an image symbolizing the relationship between trees and people, reflecting the harmony between the environment and the community.

2. How did you incorporate children and the audience into the production process?
  • I began by painting the tree trunk white to highlight the grain of the wood and make the background more vibrant, allowing the colors to stand out. I invited the participants, including the children, to contribute with a wide range of bright colors, encouraging them to paint freely. My vision was to create the feeling that we were all growing a tree together, making it a collaborative and dynamic experience.

3. What did the subject matter of your work mean to you and your artistic expression?
  • The large wall surfaces and the collaborative screens we worked on fascinated me. They pushed me to explore new ideas, inspiring a composition of vibrant shapes and colors that I could never have envisioned on my own. This collaboration allowed me to expand my creative boundaries, reflecting the dynamic, collective energy that shaped the final piece.

4. What message or emotion do you want to convey to the viewers of the mural, especially in the context of the place?
  • Since the mural was painted by a variety of people, I believe it offers a sense of discovery and intrigue for the viewers. My hope is that people feel a sense of joy and playfulness when they look at the artwork, while also feeling at ease in Green Park, a space that naturally invites comfort and enjoyment.

5. What were some of the most memorable moments or interactions you had with the children and the audience during the mural painting?
  • One of the most memorable aspects was interacting with people from around the world who passed through the area. Even though I only speak a little English, we were able to connect and share our thoughts while looking at the paintings. It was also heartwarming to see the children experience the same joy I felt while painting, creating a shared sense of happiness that transcended language.

6. What impact do you think public art can have on the local community, especially in a space like Niseko Hirafu Green Park?
  • I believe that by capturing and expressing the colors and shapes that reflect the feelings people experience in the Hirafu area, with its stunning views, public art can deepen people's connection to the space. It has the power to draw more attention to the beauty of the area, enhancing its appeal and creating a sense of shared appreciation within the community.

7. What challenges did you face in balancing your artistic vision with the collaborative input from the children and the audience?
  • One of the main goals of the project was to allow the children to draw freely, so I knew there would be unexpected colors and shapes along the way. The challenge was finding a balance between preserving their spontaneous creativity and shaping the final piece into a cohesive artwork. After they had contributed, I made adjustments to harmonize the overall density and color, ensuring it still reflected my artistic vision while honoring their contributions.

8. After the mural was completed, did you notice any changes in the way the space was used or how the community perceived it?
  • I noticed that the vibrant mural made the area more inviting and eye-catching, particularly since it’s located near the entrance and serves as a pathway for skateboarders. This lively addition seems to have encouraged more people to gather and enjoy the space, enhancing the overall atmosphere and engagement within the community.

9. What do you want the participating children to take away from this experience?
  • I hope the children will recognize the importance of expressing their unique personalities. Drawing on a large canvas allows them to engage in a dialogue with themselves and convey their thoughts and feelings to the viewer. I want them to leave with a sense of confidence in their creativity and the understanding that their voices matter in the world of art.

10. Can you talk about the materials and techniques you used, especially considering that the mural is outdoors and interacts with the public?
  • I selected painting materials designed to withstand rain and UV rays, ensuring durability in an outdoor setting. Additionally, I opted for low-odor products to accommodate the public space. To achieve vibrant color reproduction, I carefully adjusted the paint's consistency, making it easy to apply. This allowed us to complete the mural efficiently while maintaining high quality, ensuring that it would be visually striking and resilient in the elements.
